Putin is a cowboy but I don't believe he would have entered a NATO country.

I highly doubt Obama would (or debatedly should) have the balls to go to war with Russia if Ukraine was in NATO.
NATO is a very dangerous thing for the US.

Are you sure about that? Given the perceived weakness of the BHO administration by most of the world, would Putin maybe have still tested the NATO resolve?
Of course, none of us can be 100% sure of anything in the world of international affairs, I think it's the sensible position to take. But it doesn't matter, considering it's a hypothetical... Ukraine is not a member of NATO, and Russian troops are always stationed in Crimea.
