But online I'm seeing prices of anywhere from $1,100 to $1,500 for the unit only. How much could installation possibly be? No way it takes more than a few hours. $5-800 of installation seems reasonable to me. Aren't they just connecting pipes and wiring?

must just be down here, because labor was as much if not more than the unit

Installing a new unit CORRECTLY takes time. Following the steps for the job to be done right takes a little time.
