Silmarilion is about as interesting to read from cover to cover as the bible.

It encompasses the entire history of middle earth going all the way back to the entity that created it. How elves, dwarves, and men came to be...etc etc.

Every page brings a laundry list of new names of either people or places, or both. By the time you make it to the second page, you've already forgotten who the guy mentioned on the previous page is/was.

Man this thread is really deflating my enthusiasm for reading any of these books

I think I might just go back to reading old sci-fi books now
