Driving Miss Daisy was your conservative, family values movie about race. It won over the vastly superior Do the Right Thing, and even the interesting Glory, neither of which were nominated.

2005 was a weak year for major films. Crash won because they didn't want to give it to Brokeback Mountain (both Capote and Good Night and Good Luck were excellent, but not really Oscar movies). 2000-2006 was a particularly poor period for movies.
