This is your exact quote:

I don't know how people do it for 50k.

For 2 children I'd be shooting for 200k, honestly.

Where do you live? If you're in South LA, you don't need anywhere near 200k to live a comfortable lifestyle as asked in the OP. If you live somewhere more expensive, disregard my opinion.

Atlanta.

And this isn't about need. As you infer, there is probably a range from "need" to "good" to "ideal." For me, more than 200k would be ideal. I'm guessing I'll settle near a major metro area, and that private schools may be part of the equation. I'd like to offer my kids a full ride to a good college, and I think 100k each for that may be on the low side. I'd like to save for retirement, and have a good amount of financial security prior to that point.

I'm not talking about lambos and mansions, but I don't want to be in debt, and I want to live comfortably.

I know a lot of households making 200-300k, some with kids, some without, and while they live comfortably, none are living a truly elite lifestyle. Many are still going into debt despite a relatively high income.

You can live well or fairly well on far less, my argument does not contradict that.
