Hi,
I have some friends who want me to take them crawfishing in the BR area, but I'm not originally from around here and don't know where to take them. any suggestions?
Thanks!

If you're an outlaw you could go to the aquaculture station

LOL... thanks, but I'd rather not get fired from my job at LSU.

We used to go up to Cat Island when I was growing up. But I thought they started requiring a license to catch crawfish. I could be wrong, I moved away back in 2006.

That's one thing I really miss from when I was a kid. Out here on the prairie the farmers used to let you go crawfishing in the field yourself.
You could give the farmer half your catch and you got to keep your half. Or you could just pay the farmer outright for the full catch.
Spent many a Saturday catching crawfish with my family, some really good times. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Yeah, back in the day, dad and I would crawfish in Spanish Lake, on the side of the road near Ramah, bottom of the levee near Bayou Sorrel, in the Atchafalaya Basin, etc. don't think many of those places are doable now.

plenty of places in the basin that it's doable. just watch out for the locals.

i mean, if you're only there for a couple of hours running set nets, no ones going to mess with you.
run your traps where someone else already has traps out though and you will be lucky if you get your traps back.

you know a whole hell of a lot nicer trappers in the basin than i do
the first time i went into the basin a couple of my friends took me my junior year at LSU, growing up a hillbilly my dad use to tell me endless stories about being in the basin while on the state deer project during the early eighties, so to be inviited to go to the basin and trap my dinner was a dream come true.. so i thought
I remember my friend dustin,(who had invited me), grabbing his .30-30 and me saying,"oh shite! we gonna go get some gators!" he just looked up at me for a second, smiled and kept loading his rifle
i had no idea we were going after some poachers that were jacking his dad's traps, there i was riding into the basin with my 10-22 to stop who knows what, turns out he was just fricking with me and we ended up trapping about a little over a sacks worth

i dont know. most people who frick with your stuff when you're not there are cowards. they won't do anything to your face because they're trapping on state land and they don't have any more right to it than you or i.

We used deep water nets. Like crab nets with smaller mesh. Caught big crawfish. Nobody ever bitched at us.

Hey Luzianne,
Did you ever find spots to catch crawfish? I want to find a place to start bringing my young son, but would prefer something closer to the walker area. We crawfish in sherburne and would like another option closer to this end.

Nothing other than what is listed here, Bud. If I do, I'll let you know.

i've never tried it before, but you could try Joyce WMA. it's not too far from walker and from what i understand the whole thing is a swamp.
