Who would you recommend?

Posted by Budwiiser on 7/5/16 at 3:46 pm
I have an older model evinrude outboard that's running bad. I live in walker and don't mind driving a little ways for someone good. Any recommendations?
Thanks, not familiar with that area. Where would I launch?
Are you talking about the mouth of the tchafuncta river? If so, what about going up te river a little ways, on the north side of the bridge? Or do I need to stay closer to the lake?

Where to crab - close to Walker

Looking for places to take the kids crabbing. I have a boat, so I won't be landlocked. I have double ring nets that we run. I tried lake maurepas around the manchac area a couple weeks ago and struck out big time. I would prefer something within 45 minute drive from walker so we can go often. Places like grand isle and montegut are just a bit to far for a one day trip.
Hey REB, I'd recommend checking out louisiana sportsman and craigslist, I've seen several posts there before by folks who make and sell them. I was fortunate enough to get some through a trade with a buddy, so I can't necessarily recommend anyone specific.

BTW, care to share your experience out at Sherburn? I've gone once last year and once this year and struck out both times.
Hey RATeam, where's honey island, I haven't heard of it before.
Hey Bluemoons, I went today, prolly from 10 to 2
I used traps RATeam. I used some traps with beef melt, and some with chicken necks. To my surprise, the chicken produced Better. Each set of 5, I put 3 with melt, and 2 with chicken
Thanks child, I agree, gonna be a few more weeks before I expect to get enough to eat. :banghead:

I have a polaris ranger and chest waiters, so I have the right gear, just don't have the magic yet. :geauxtigers:
I set 5 traps at a time in prolly 8 different places, each soak was well over 1.5 hours. It's only my second time out there, so I'm not sure how to describe where I set them at. I can say when you get to the split by the trailer, I set traps in each direction. I had chest waiters, so I did some walking :nana:

I spent most of the time to the left by the ponds way in the back by the lookout platform, tried in all directions.

Not too good, set all 20 traps, the first 10 brought in nada. You read that right, not one stinking bug. After that, I prolly caught 30 crawfish. All but about 6 would fall right through my trap if it weren't for the fact that they we're latched on to the bait and the bait wouldn't fit through the holes. They we're that small. Bought my kids a couple of the small dip nets. All the crawfish we fought wouldn't have filled up one of them.

To add to it, blew a tire on my trailer on the downside of the I-10 Mississippi River bridge, and live in walker. Just didn't close out the day good either. But, there's always a bright spot, got to spend time with my kids, they still have fun!
If there's any chance you'd be willing to give me a pointer or two about that place, I would surely appreciate it! I'm bringing my wife and daughter with me tomorrow and I'd surely like to make an impression ;-).

I'm gonna bring 20 pillow traps, half dozen set nets, chicken necks and beef melt for bait.

You can email me if you don't want to post it here... Breauxcm@yahoo.com.
anybody get out there yet this year?

Beats me, I was shocked. Bone dry is an exagerarion, lots of soft mud, but nothing more than ankle deep water, and even that was hard to come by. Locals at the bait shop also commented on how low the water is
Went try off the smite in the maurepas area, swamps all dry, complete bust

Thanks Tamer, I'm familiar with most of what you mentioned. The only challenge I have, other than if you ask my wife, is finding local public property. I have a camp in the basin where I can load up, but that's about 3.5 hours one way and by the time I'm done paying for fuel for the truck and boat, it would be much cheaper to buy a sack!
