I was talking about this to a few people last week. MM has absolutely transformed in the last few years from the shirtless rom com guy to a highly respected actor. You really see his acting chops in HBO's True Detective of late, and of course Dallas Buyer's Club, Mud, and even Magic Mike.

MM interviewed with SVP on ESPN a few weeks back and said that a few years ago he reached a point where he decided he had never actually challenged himself with the acting roles he usually took. So he made a concerted effort to go beyond his comfort zone and take roles that required more of what he was accustomed to.

You're really seeing his talent of late IMO. His last few roles, and HBO's True Detective, have totally changed my opinion of the guy.

We watched Killer Joe last weekend. That was a pretty good movie. He was really creepy in that.

true detective is what clinched it for me. He is really good in that, showing quite a range from Mud to dallas buyers club to this. Quite impressive.
