The eyelet from BBQ Guru is used where one of the existing grate supports is located so there is no modding the WSM. The grommet mod requires the use of a step bit and painters tape.
I plan on making a permanent hole in the bottom of my WSM, Weber Kettle and Mini to mount the fan, depending on which cooker I am using, for my auto temp controller (CyberQ) and the step bit is perfect for that. The mounting holes are capped off with a silicone cover when not in use.
