This term really pisses me off, and it's not politically correct, it's politically wrong. What do we have in common with people who lived in the Dark Ages? What was the big thing that happened between 1 CE and 1 BCE? It's not as if they discovered the printing press then. It is the estimated date of the birth of Christ.
If you want a "Common Era", then redo the dates completely. The only times that make sense are the start of the Renaissance, Columbus' discovery of America, The founding of the United States, the start of the Industrial Revolution, or the moment we dropped the first Atomic Bomb. A time when barbarian savages can come into your town and rape, kill, and plunder everything doesn't sound like a "Common Era".
