Cost of living and practicalky no freedom from politicians and over-regulation is what makes Cali a bad state. Nothing to do with lifestyles or the Landscape.
For example, if you're not making at least 170K, you don't even entertain the thought of moving to the bay area or L.A.

If you look around you can find decent rentals there. I have a friend that makes about 75K and she is doing just fine there.

Or you just prepare for the fact that your 2,500 square foot house on 1/2 acre will instead be a 1,000 square foot bungalow or condo.
