This is not the case for MANY subjects. Older books just aren't on the internet, and older information inside those books is not there either. I did a paper awhile back about the first 50 years of a multinational company. One of the biggest timber companies in the world actually. There was barely anything online about it, so I went to Middleton. In there, I found three different books about the exact subject, two of them being written by the founding members of the company, and about their family life before and after the formation of the company.

Although I do agree that the importance of knowing how to do old-fashioned, non-electronic / non-boolean search engine searching is probably not absolutely necessary anymore, I also agree that learning how to do the old-fashioned research can teach some needed basic research, problem-solving, critical thinking skills that a lot of electronic research techniques don't provide.

It's less about the information you find (no doubt you can find it quicker and easier electronically) than it is about learning the building block skills that traditional research can teach you.

It's kind of like learning how to do math with pencil and paper. Sure there are calculators / computers where you can just plug in the data and get the easy answer, but it's still helpful to know the principles behind the math and you only get that from working it out yourself.
