You're talking about a kid that wound up going to an Alabama school. Just because one grey area violation slid by doesn't mean another different one will, especially with a LSU recruit being involved

Eh, it's his parents business, not his.
It doesn't have his likeness or name on it so he's within the guidelines.

You aren't compliance either. You're just making assumptions based on your desire for him to play and you have nothing to actually back up your claim. The rules clearly apply to nicknames and Buga is his nickname. The parents are definitely rolling the dice to gain a little bit of cash now.

How about I link LSU's compliance office..
quote:
?The LSU Compliance Office has issued several Cease & Desist notifications for products including the name, likeness and/or image of LSU football student-athlete Tyrann Mathieu.
Please be advised that the sale of any products and/or advertisements including the name, likeness or image of this individual or any other LSU student-athlete is in violation of NCAA Bylaw 12.5.2.2 and could have a negative impact on the involved student-athlete's eligibility.
Apparel or paraphernalia including the phrase "Honey Badger" accompanied by the number 7 or the individual's name or any other variation thereof (e.g., TM7, TM, HB7, etc.) is prohibited. Because it is a recognizable nickname, "Honey Badger" is considered a likeness of Tyrann Mathieu under NCAA regulations.
LINK
This is a tad bit different because it requires the additional identifiers simply because Honey Badger was around well before Mathieu as an internet meme.

trying to justify this from a legal, logic, or reason, point of view doesn't apply to the NCAA. The NCAA is going to look at it like this: Who is going to buy these shirts? LSU fans. Who is going to profit from these sales? LF and his family. Who will take the brunt of the repercussions? LSU

This X1M
I speak from experience of working with NCAA compliance.
This won't fly. Period.
If LF and his family want to get away with this, he needs to decommit from LSU and go to Bama. (There is a little bit of sarcasm in that statement, but not really).

Let them sell their ideals and it is not HIS nickname.

It won't matter to the NCAA. What is written now is so ambiguous that the NCAA can point to anything in their bylaws and simply say "in this case, we really mean this, but in that case, we meant that"....and there isn't a damn thing anyone can do about it.
Latest and greatest example of this was Penn State and their program being punished for Sandusky's work. No reason on earth that those players should have suffered for that, but this is the NCAA and they can do what they want.
Just like ULM has to change their logos, spend millions of dollars they don't have doing it, but FSU did not.
The list goes on and on.....
This will not fly. I will be shocked if it does.

The only way it's different is that Honey Badger required an additional qualifier to link it to Mathieu because it was already established. I've got to give you credit, though. The facts keep hitting you in the square in the jaw and yet somehow you keep acting like they're not there. Kudos to you, sir.

It was a likeness because it had a damn #7 on it
Buganation is an idea. The ok sign on the shirt is not a likeness of Leonard Fournette
You people are paranoid and overreaching

The rantards will make all the points needed for the NCAA and there will be no need for an investigation just a transcript from here.

You are wrong. It was a likeness because Honey Badger was a recognizable nickname. It says so clearly in what I linked from the LSU compliance department. Buga Nation might be an "idea", but it's also his nickname and it clearly is deriving some if not all of it's value off of his athletic success. Regardless, I'm done with this. There's no convincing someone with such a blatant disregard of the facts. Since you are so convinced we are paranoid and overreaching, I suggest that you bring this to the attention of LSU compliance and see just how long this t-shirt business lasts.

Bottom line is LSU compliance is far more paranoid and over reactionary than any of these fans and they haven't shut it down yet.
Granted, he's not enrolled in school yet.
Guess we'll just wait and see
