Bad idea. Really bad idea.

If it originated as... say... his parents' idea anyway, and he just repeats the phrase or something like that, then if the parents want to sell shirts, etc. I don't see an issue as long as they run it, maintain the books, etc, and LF doesn't have an official connection. The product doesn't infringe on anything LSU, and LF already has a history of making that hand gesture, so he shouldn't have to stop, unless the proprietor of the business (his parents) insist he stop for improperly using their intellectual property. I don't know the details, though, so may be wrong and am only speculating on the legal angle.
In any case, I find it a lot less flagrant than... I don't know... Saban giving high school girls jobs in the athletic dept... when those girls happen to be dating recruits; or hiring fathers and uncles of other recruits when those players become high profile.
LSU's compliance dept. is definitely proactive (to the point of being antagonistic), so I'm sure they will ensure that there isn't an issue here.

people would have to mail money to a po box in slidell. They may just have to repay the $82 they make from this.

College athletes can't earn money?

The mere fact that something like this could actually be a problem royally annoys me.
I mean, so what if he wanted to sell gear with something he could've easily trademarked by now. I guess the idea is some LSU booster could "buy" their apparel and somehow they all get a couple Gs in their pockets of profit or something under the table or whatever.
A real sweetener to get players to commit. Make a catchphrase or brand name, ???, profit!
Only the ??? is "Go to LSU."

How are you people saying this is a bad idea?
He trademarked the slogan; he's selling his merchandise; he's promoting the image; he's not promoting himself.
The NCAA can go frick themselves if they think he is receiving improper benefits from this.

Yup, its actually really smart. It has nothing to do with "him" in a way that the NCAA can legally connect the dots. It's a clothing line with no reference to his identity as a football player or his identity in general.

Unnecessary risk
Is it a risk that the NCAA might rattle their sabers? Sure. But by the letter of the NCAA's laws, it's fine. If it's legal on paper, it should be the family's call if they want to take the risk. And to them, what they gain from it might not be considered "unnecessary."
