I think it is an interesting quote from Lewis in that it encapsulates many of the basic precepts that result in distain between the right and the left.
It is undeniable that most liberals, and even some avowed socialists, prefer, or at least, accept the term progressive as a description of their political existence.
As Lewis, I believe, correctly points out, one must necessarily change for the better to truly aspire to progress.
In order to move to the positive and not to the negative or stay neutral, you must necessarily know what neutral is currently...you must know what is better. You must have baseline standards.
It fascinates me what constitutes standards for progression in our society, whether you be left or right leaning.
