The best advice I can give is to find an experienced builder you can trust. A custom home should be just that. Put the things in it that make you happy.
Some of the stuff already mentioned is great if properly executed. If installed incorrectly, they can be troublesome.
I'm building, and I'm going to pass on the spray foam, tankless water heaters, and steam generators.
I have done my research, and I made these decisions based on how my family would use them. They are cost prohibitive to us.
