When/Why Did The Media Start Naming Winter Storms?

I don't officially know.
I do believe that they want ratings and viewers, and naming them gives them life.
Sort of like hurricanes. Who fricking cares what the name of the hurricane is? It doesn't have a name. But when you give it a name, you turn it into a villain.
I just wish they'd give the storms actual villain names.
Hurricane Godzilla set for landfall tomorrow.
Winter storm Sauron has its eye on Chicago.

Yep, blame the Weather Channel. They started doing it a few years ago. I refuse to participate.

Yeah it's a weather channel thing. The weather service certainly doesn't participate.
Next they'll be naming every low pressure system that produces a few showers. Getting desperate since they started doing reality shows and less weather (hasn't worked out so well).
