re: anybody ever turn water main off to prevent pipes from freezing?

The pipes do not have to be totally empty. Pipes burst because when the water inside them freezes it expands. If the pipe is not full and there is only a little water in there then if it freezes it won't expand enough to damage the pipes.

It took way to long for someone to say this. As long as the water/ice has somewhere to expand the pipes should not get damaged. Turning off the main and opening a faucet or two should be more than enough to protect you home.
