I think it was in the 80's prior to the Kentucky game just before the player introductions. They darkened the arena and the place went crazy. It had to be the loudest I have ever heard the PMAC. Everyone went nuts as he was let down with a rope and safety harness. We killed Kentucky that day.

Did it all the time in the early 90s

It was always awesome. They half arse tried it last year, but they did it way too early and it took a full minute for him to drop because some genius thought the drop needed to be timed with the eye of the tiger song. Just drop the rope and let him repel down right before the starting line ups like he used to do for the kentucky games and the place will go nuts.

They did it once last season and it sucked.

Yep. Sometimes he would come down head first, really fast, then pull up and flip feet down at the last possible moment.
Pretty sure it was a ringer fake Mike, since he never had a tail.
For all of you youngsters, it wasn't the REAL tiger... it was the guy in the tiger suit.

This is all I think about when hearing stories of mascots being lowered from ceilings. LINK

I was there for that a few times in the early 80s. I was probably 6-10 years old. It made an impression and got the crowd wound up. They should bring that tradition back!

Those were the greatest years in Tiger basketball. It set the tone for some of the most exciting games in LSU History

I was courtside. About the loudest I ever heard the PMAC. Kentucky was either #1 or #2 at the time, and we beat their brains in, something like 33 points. That may have been JJ's last home game, and it was one of his best games as a Tiger.

like it was yesterday. i brought my late father to the game and he was from kentucky originally and a big wildcat fan. the pmac was rocking and it was great to finally give the old man shite about kentucky basketball. if my memory is correct, mike also got ejected from that game for impersonating the refs posing as a blind man. boy, LSU had some exciting teams in those days; daddy dale was a character.

It was a LA State Trooper dressed as Mike. Tactical Unit.

Seems I remember hearing it was actually a local swat team cop that repelled down in a Mike The Tiger suit - either way, what the hell , let's try it again.

My dad used to do this. He saw this thread being shared on Facebook and sent the link to me because he thought I might post. See quotes below for his comments:
Before any detectives say anything about MSG's post earlier, yes, he's my cousin.

It is very cool to read these comments. It’s funny how the truth is somewhere in the middle of all of that.
Facts are: a State Trooper did it for a couple of years, I believe 81&82, I did it from 83-93. In 94 and 95 or 96, the ROTC group did it until the kid burned his hand real bad. That was the last time it was done as a rappel. I believe, from the later comments in the article, they lowered someone in a slow descent. One time, we lowered a manikin in a Kentucky basketball uniform about half way. The crowd was booing so loud… until we cut the rope. The manikin hit the floor and broke apart. Then, Mark Jeffers, the real mascot at that time (and the best and most controversial, in my opinion (blind ref skit was his idea)), came across the court with a big dust mop and swept the pieces off of the court. The crowd went wild! The comment about upside down, really fast (almost a free fall) and flipping at the last minute is true. I did that a few times.
