While many people have seen the I-10 Dalrymple Drive exit or driven along Dalrymple Drive when visiting LSU, and most people are aware of the LSU vet school, relatively few people know that there is a connection between the two: Dr. William Haddock Dalrymple was LSU’s first veterinarian.

Dr. Dalrymple, a graduate of the Glasgow Veterinary College in Scotland, joined the faculty of Louisiana State University on Sept. 16, 1889, as a professor of comparative medicine and the first veterinarian of the Agricultural Experiment Station.

He eventually was named dean of the College of Agriculture and Director of the Agricultural Experimental Station.

In 1921, Dr. Dalrymple stepped down from his administrative positions, but continued to teach up until his death.
