For reloading a deer hunting round, it's hard to beat the variety of the .308 calibers. If all you're going to do is whitetails I'd do a .308. If you're likely to go out west one day but still primarily just shoot whitetail, you might want to think about 30-06. If you go our west regularly, you probably need a rifle just for that and that should be .300 WM or so. All have the variety of bullets available in the .308 caliber so there's a LOT you can do with it.
But for just normal shooting, of the three, I'd go .308. 06 and WM are a lot more punishing in the recoil department.

My favorite is 6.5x55 swede, but that may not be the best choice for you.
You can buy a remington 700 in .308 for less than $400 at academy. Find out if you like it first (you will) and you will already have the best platform to start building a custom rifle from. Until then you'll already have a great hunting rifle to learn reloading with.

Ive been reloading for about 14 years, and its time I learn a precision rifle round or two or three
I live in Nevada I am not a hunter, but if need be I would want a do all rifle for out here. We have it all, accept grizz and brown bear.
I thought Remington 700's were not good?

I do like having a wide range of projectile weights to choose from, and I will be casting boolits for this as well

The 700 is by a very long ways the most popular starting point for custom rifles.
Just about any long range rifle you look at will have a smithed remington 700 action.

great, they are affordable which helps, so a 700 in 260 or 308
Popular
