You would be hard pressed to beat American Funds. Even with A shares. Yes it's not pretty initially but in the long run the dreaded "load" won't make any difference. Run a 10 year comparison with an Am Funds A shares against a low cost Vanguard. You'll be surprised. You could also consider C shares if you don't like loads.
