Dennis Quaid in that movie where he's a detective and ends every sentence with chere.

This. And he pronounced it as Cher, like in Sonny and Cher. You would think that SOMEBODY involved with that movie would have caught that. It was really kind of pitiful that they couldn't do any more preparation for a role in a movie than that.

I will give him credit - there was a string of 3 movies in 3 years that he made that were either set, filmed (or both) in Louisiana - and The Big Easy was the first. His portrayal of Jerry Lee Lewis was spot on, and he adopted a much more generic accent for Everybody's All American.

So, he lived and learned. But, yeah, pretty atrocious in The Big Easy - and I said he was trying to do a Yat, because that was always my impression - but that is just speculation - that's what it sounds like, but adding "cher" on the end - maybe he was trying to do cajun and it is even worse than I thought?

On the other hand, while a little exaggerated and not spot on, Michael Jeter in The Green Mile - wasn't terrible - I probably can't do much better. The problem is they try to do a generic cajun accent, which nobody has. You have to pick one of the (of course my characterizations are subjective) "softer" (Lake Charles, Avoyelles, Lafayette), or "thicker" (Breaux Bridge, Ville Platte, South Lafourche) ones - and stick with it - to be convincing, at least IMHO.
