if it is like most, it dumps water into the garbage disposal...so, if your garbage disposal (or the line draining it) were clogged, I would think that water could back up into the dish washer...
now, that sounds kinda unsanitary and I would think there would be some kind of backflow preventer to keep that from happening, but that is what popped into my head...

There is a rubber flap on the dishwasher, his must be missing, they actually come off a lot.
