The Jumbo set QB Sneak

Can someone explain this to me?
If you're going to sneak on 4th and inches or right on the goal line, wouldn't it make more sense to operate from a set that spreads out the D, but keeps the QB under center?
One of those things I've never understood. Seems like it would be easier to sneak from a 4/5 wide set so you have 5 linemen going against 6. When you keep TEs and RBs, their defensive counterparts, can just stack the middle of the line.

Its like some sort of paradox.
Oh, we need to get an inch, but we only have 5 lineman, we are going to need more than that. Add in some guys. All hell, now its all bunched up, we need to spread them out. Repeat.

I don't get it either. Those extra 4 bodies you have near your QB don't help you any in blocking the play, and only serve to draw more defenders into the box.

I agree... but when you spread it out it creates space, and that can benefit both the offense and defense. You can blitz which gives D the advantage because they can send more people than the OL has to block. Overload the middle gaps, or any gap, etc. And instead of just having to get a few inches, you back the QB up and turn it into 4 yards. I mean you can be in the spread set, but whose to say that the D still wont send 8 people and just leave someone unblocked because they think its a draw? Yea its a guess, but most defensive calls are. And sometimes they guess right, other times they guess wrong.
Jumbo set goal line is man vs man. Just got to win the individual battles.
Just gotta go with what you think will get it done. Both of the choices have certain advantages and disadvantages. With Cam as my QB, i think i would do the jumbo sneak.

If you put 2 RBs in the backfield, that's 2 players the defense can line up right over the center, why would you do that?

quote:But only by 1. With 2 RBs in the backfield, they can do so by 3.

quote:When i say spread, i just mean spread the field. No RBs, whatsoever. If you put 5 WRs, the D can't send 8 guys, if they have 8 in the box, you can audible to an easy TD pass, pretty much automatic if you have 5 WRs.

quote:Exactly. And the 2 RBs men are 2 guys that can line up right over center and frick the play up. Line those guys up out wide and those 2 men are taken out of the play.

Well, you do need one RB for the Bush Push. But not two, for sure.

Keep it five wide but have the qb under center

I think I threw everyone off when I said run the spread. I meant to say just spread out the D, but definitely keep it under center.
I don't get how the jumbo set, specifically with 2 RBs is a better set than the 5 Wide set with QB under center.

I mean i get what youre saying. I do. Both sides have its advantages and disadvantages. Im not saying I would do it 1 way or the other.
Yeah they can. Will they? Who knows. But if they are thinking its gonna be a QB sneak, they can send everyone and leave WRs unguarded. And even if they dont send 8, the offense has 5 OL in front of the QB. The D can match up with the WRs and still send 6, sending more guys than the offense can block, which leaves a LB like Willis or Bowman running around unblocked, and thats the main thing you dont want.
And you can audible to the pass if you see it. But if you line up man vs man in the spread, and on the snap send the 2 DBs guarding the inside slot guys, they would be unblocked and if the blitz is timed right they could get to the QB or cause him to go a diff route. Especially if the middle is clogged with great DL and LBs like the 49ers have.
And if you go jumbo, the 2 RBs in the back field arent causing more people to be over the center. I mean youre gonna have 2 LBs in the A gaps regardless. You dont have 4 in there. And if you split the RBs out wide, the CBs would be on them, not the LBs.
If my QB is Cam Newton, I would most likely due the jumbo set QB sneak. Most of the time he will get it. It just didnt happen. There are strengths and weaknesses in each set. There is never a perfect call. Sometimes calls work, other times they dont.
