Seeing if any of yall might have some advice for a newbie. I recently just got my first credit card and it was a Hilton Honors card. I was wondering what card someone might recommend next? I am looking for something that I can use with flying.

Without question, your next card should be the Chase Sapphire Reserve. LINK
Comes with 50K chase ulitmate rewards. Most valuable points in the game.
The $450 fee is offset by a $300 travel credit every year, primary rental car insurance etc, Complimentary Priority Pass airport lounge access with free entry for upto 2 additional guests plus any number of family.

Okay what if I wanted to go no AF route? Just looking at different options

I have the Freedom and Freedom Unlimited to go with the Sapphire Reserve. Freedom offers quarterly 5% cash back categories and the Freedom Unlimited is 1.5% cash back for all purchases; both have no annual fee. The Sapphire Reserve comes into play because you can transfer the Freedom and Freedom Unlimited rewards which are worth 1.5 times more when booked through their travel site. It also has 3% cash back on restaurants and travel.
ETA: Just noticed the flying part, maybe try LINK for an airline that you may use.
I should only be at 2/24, so I’m keeping an eye out for another card, preferably to compliment the Sapphire Reserve.

I've hit the United card four times. Twice for myself and wife.
Since it's a transfer option it's a good route to go. We get targeted for over 55k offers. Last one was 70k plus 5k AU for my wife.

I rarely fly. Are there any cards that I can transfer points to Sapphire Reserve?

What are you using Reserve for if you don't fly?
Posted on 11/7/17 at 6:25 pm to Teddy Ruxpin
It’s mostly used as a multiplier for points on the Freedoms card. So far the point multiplier has outweighed the annual fee. We will probably use its points for vacation. I’ve had it less than a year so I’ll evaluate its value at the end of each year.

There's no real travel card with no AF.

I'm coming up on my booking window for Cathay/JAL to Asia. Not sure if I'm going to book my outbound the moment it opens up or wait for the whole window to open and see both out and inbound.
Hope I don't get too much phantom award space.

Are you trying to book J or F?
I would book as the award opens up. But just to get an idea, you can see how the award availability is right now for 330 - 7 days. If it looks wide open, then you could wait. If not, then I'd probably book as they open.
Just an FYI - CX awards have become much much more hard to book now. JAL is easier, but harder than before.
Lastly - if Etihad is an option, that might be your best bet if none of the above work out.

Business. Hoping the fact they open a lot of that works out.
I've been using Qantas's search engine. It is looking pretty good. It has almost always looked really good which is what worries me BA has pretty much been the same way.
I think American's routing rules would hinder that option, no? I can only go over the Pacific to Asia, and can only pass through Zone 1, 2, India, and Sri Lanka I believe.

I don't think thats the case. I was recently able to price out ATL-DOH-BOM on QR and JFK-AUH-BOM (and v.v.). Not sure if this is what you are talking about though. Maybe worth it to see if AA agents (call the Australia number) are able to price it out. Funnily enough, Etihad Apartments/F/Biz seem to be the best available atm.
Out of curiosity - which routes are you looking at that have such good availability?

That's interesting because I see all the time that it "shouldn't".
I know Doha is an exception to Africa on Qatar, so they may enjoy an exception.

ORD - HKG, LAX - HKG, and SFO-HKG have all looked pretty good. But then again, I'm using Qantas/BA and not Cathay's search.
When I checked JAL some weeks ago it looked Dallas was not bad. Haven't checked it today though.

Do you generally get more value from the point transferring them to flights/hotel rewards versus booking through the chase site when they are valued at 1.5?
We are waiting on my work assignment to change in January, then we will decide on a vacation like Disney or Jamaica.

In simple terms, Yes.
I've flown 2 people Business class to Asia, South America, and Africa coming up. I got way more than 1.5 cents per point doing that.
But this also gets into the weeds of what "value" means to you. Lots of discussion on that topic on the internet.
Posted on 11/8/17 at 10:35 am to Teddy Ruxpin
Once we decide on an actual trip, I'll probably do more digging toward the airline/hotel points depending on our destination. Value to me is only going to be I can stay at this hotel for x points using the points through chase or y points by transferring them to the hotel rewards. Whichever takes the least amount of points is which one I'd use.

For those with the Sapphire Reserve...is there a way to upgrade from Preferred then before the $450 fee, downgrade back to the preferred card?
Posted on 11/8/17 at 10:55 am to AUtigerNOLA
I believe my fee was charge within the first month, but I may be mistaken. Keep in mind that your first “travel” purchase, up to $300, is credited back. That dampens the charge quite a bit, down to $150. To me the initial rewards far outweigh the $150.
