Now they are in the position of walking around pretty much telling their coach "we all find you to be 'meh', so hire someone exciting". The guy was shot in the back out of the gate by Red and is now being emasculated by Patterson who is telling him, not only that he can not make all of his own hires, but also that he has to hire someone to make up for himself!
I just don't get how everyone seemed to love Mack.
Dude won 2 conference titles in 15 years.... at Texas. Two.

I said it in a different thread, but I will say it here also.
The only dysfunction in this entire situation is the group clamoring to keep their 9.95/ mo subscription rape going.
They have no contacts or sources any longer so they post speculation and wish lists from formerly connected people.
the new ad has done a great job of keeping his and the HC's process to himself. Basically any "info" that is passed along is pure speculation.

The recruiting sites have also been fairly suspect.

Lincoln Riley is supposed to be the OC.

Their fans didn't love Mack. McCombs and Jamail did. Jamail even wanted to threaten message board posters who wanted Mack Brown gone.

What Jamail thinks of fans who criticize Mack Brown:
quote:
When Jamail defended the coach to an Austin American–Statesman sportswriter after the OSU debacle, fans aimed their vitriol at him, threatening to topple his statues on campus, Saddam Hussein–style. The old lawyer, who went to his first UT game in 1942, refused to let up, partly because he wanted to shift attention off Mack, but mostly because he loves a good fight even more than beating OU. “Tell them to send me my money back, and then they can pull the statues down,” Jamail said over the phone the morning after the Tech game. “I don’t know who the hell those f—ing crybabies on the Internet are. Could be Aggies or the Taliban, for all I know. Or f—ing al Qaeda. Because every real UT fan is proud of this team and the way they’ve turned their season around.”

Strong's been given the rope, we'll see what he does with it.
Wow. Did you really mean to type rope and Strong in the same sentence relative to the UT experience?

No, I didn't, certainly not in the context you were thinking - a context that never crossed my mind. My point was that Strong will have the ability to be successful or not on his own by being able to choose his own coaches - which he has done so far.

So, for an aggy, black man + rope = ?
Tell us again, who is the racist?

People assume Strong always wanted to bring in Watson but his public comments actually refute this notion, mainly because Watson does not have Texas ties and is not known as a spread offense guy.
Word on the street is that Watson and Wickline will be co-OC. Which means that Watson is the OC, but due to the negative feedback from the initial word that he was the guy, Strong has to hide that fact under the co-OC contrivance. This also means that Texas whiffed on a "splash" OC hire.

Burton is flat out saying that the reason Wickline is being given the OC title is to avoid paying Okie State the $600k buyout for a lateral move

His resume is not impressive enough to get people to leave him alone and let him do his job.
Saban had a track record he established at LSU so he could take control at Alabama. Strong doesn't have that. What did he really win at Louisville? Not much.
What did Miles have? He had even less of a track record and and at least at Louisville, Strong crushed UF in a BCS bowl. Miles took a 9-4 year and had them at least 11-2 the next four years straight. LSU had some true freshman talent, but he molded them into BCS and BCS champions.
I think Strong can come in and do the exact same thing.

I assume you mean Burton is saying this - as right now he is the only one (then you have Chip Brown saying Scott Linehan is interviewing, then you have some other guy saying it's Joker Phillips....no one not named Charlie Strong and Steve Patterson has a clue what they're talking about).
I'd be fine with Wickline and Watson as Co-OCs (there are several reasons to name someone a Co-OC). Like I said earlier, I'd like to see how this all plays out before coming to any conclusions about the success, or lack thereof, of Strong hiring coaches.
ETA - I forgot to add that others are saying it's going to be Lincoln Riley from ECU.

That's some funny shite right there that both Texas A+M and the University of Texas hired Black coaches with decent (But not phemononal) records/credentials and grossly over paid them 5 Million smackers per year just to prove to rest of the country that they're not a bunch of racists!
Watch what happens at A+M this season minus JFF and still no defense.
Too early for Strong, but I'll give that three years.
Your hate fo seeing a black man lead anything astounds me. If it isn't the swag crap, it's this stuff about Strong. Sumlin has a stout recruiting class and Strong is a great defensive mind. If Strong can get somebody to run the offense and Sumlin somebody to run the defense, they will both be a force in the coming years.

What did Miles have?
Miles was the first Oklahoma State coach to accomplish two things:
1. Beat Oklahoma in back to back years.
2. Win in Norman.

Yep. Go ask Gundy how easy that is for an OSU coach....word is he's feeling a little heat for being 1-8 against OU (and I thought Mack's record was bad).
