I'm surprised at the outcry I've seen over this honestly. I don't mind it. If it's this or an 18 game schedule, this is infinitely better. Even still, less than half the teams in the league would make it.
Not to mention, it makes getting the #1 seed even more valuable as the only spot with a bye.

This was always the end game when the NFL threw out the 18 game schedule. The extra playoff game is a "compromise" that the NFLPA will be all for. Goodell is playing chess and DeMaurice Smith is playing checkers.
