That is true. I was in armor which is sort of similar to earth moving heavy equipment. The fact I was in the army only got my foot in the door (I started out in out Shipping Dept making $5.50 per hour). After that it was on the job experience that I used to advance. Now this was mostly in the mid to late 90's and this company was (and still is somewhat) at that time very much old school in that they place a greater weight on experience than a piece of sheep skin. That has changed a good deal though. I'm pretty sure had I started out 10 years later than I did, I never would make it to where I am.

I am pretty much you, except I got laid off at one point. Trying to get back to where I was has been next to impossible, although I'm in the running for a position right now with a mom and pop. I have a decent job now, but I'm still over $20k from where I used to be. I'm also completely dead ended because I don't have the piece of paper they want. Any major company or gov't organization has minimum requirements that won't get you past HR if you don't meet them, they'll never even look at your resume.
