Who but a woman would care most about the individual personal struggles of the most irritating characters? Kes is the most wasted character? Wow.
And no, 6 of 9 was not inspired by Data's tension with the Borg queen. Are you serious? You don't think it was so that horny nerds could stroke off actually while they watch the episode? Nah. Couldn't be.

From the start of the series you will like Tom Paris, one of the best concepts for a character in Star Trek. He is great for his screentime (and done surprisingly well by the actor). He is like the complete opposite of everything about Wesley.
And while I absolutely love the Doctor, once he, neelix (who blows a bag of dicks except in the episode he leaves for good), that annoying little kid, and 7 of 9 are firmly entrenched the show becomes about them. Very little of the far reaching plot except when it needs to be. The intriguing Maquis stuff disappears by the 5th episode. Only to resurface when they need a plot and then its awesome, see others references to Year of Hell.
Year of Hell is the best example of Voyager's unique style of the classic Star Trek Bottle episode. Instead of just an episode with two characters, Voyager has its basic plot episodes, and then episodes that throw shite completely against the wall. Obviously when they spend time in another dimension/on the sim deck in an earth environment it is to save on the budget. But other stuff like the Captain Proton stuff is great. The episode where they meet the Aliens descended from Earth Dinosaurs is a personal favorite.
Janeway and Chatokay are the most bland characters to ever exist. Janeway starts as a 90s feminist political statement (Hillary Clinton IN SPACE) but after being borged becomes an even more boring Mama bear.
Chatokay shows less emotion than pure Vulcan Tuvok. This makes him the worst possible native american stereotype. It is basically the same thing if they had made any human character played by an African American an ex football star/former pimp who enjoyed the finer things in life like Replicator Watermelon wine, Chitterling soup, and Space Station Nashville style hot chicken.
Though concerning the OP's choice of medium, you are considering buying one season of voyager which you may not even like for 5 bucks? Yet you will not "commit" to Netflix for 9 bucks? You would get all the seasons of voyager plus DS9, Enterprise, TNG, TOS for that one price. Don't like them? watch something else. Even if you got each season of each series on DVD for that low yard sale price of 5 dollars, and you only used Netflix for Star Trek you would have to pay for Netflix for like 5 years to come out ahead doing it your way.
I can see wanting to own a physical copy of something you like but why something you are just trying out?

Well now I feel thoroughly chastised. I didn't say I wouldn't get Netflix. I just don't have Netflix. It never really crossed my mind to join Netflix. I don't really have all that much time to watch a lot of TV anyway.
I guess I started this thread because I was a huge fan of TNG. Like I never missed an episode no matter what. I had never watched an episode of Voyager. I guess I wanted to see if I could feel about Voyager like I did TNG. But I'm older now, and much more jaded than the starry eyed youth I was.

DS9 does have one of the best stand alone episodes of all of the series. Or so I think.
The one where O'Brien is sentenced to 20 years hard time and the sentence is carried out immediately via memory imprint.

It is reminiscent of the episode where Riker is playing the guy in the asylum, then he's actually in the asylum (or is he?), etc. Another TNG similarity is the episode where Picard experiences an entire lifetime (a concept they explored in Generations, as well), Inner Light.
The DS9 episode, Hard Time is one of my favorite stand alone episodes, as well.

If you don't like it you stop watching it then you watch something else.
But Voyager is an acquired taste.

I tend to agree. However, The Doctor is reason enough to watch Voyager, IMHO - perhaps my favorite non-TOS character.

Like I said Tom is mine or at least the concept of him. You can tell they set up to be the Wesley of Voyager until Wesley was so hated.

I definitely got that vibe when I first watched Voyager (when it was in first run). Now in the middle of a re-watch you recall the episode where Paris broke the "warp" barrier, super-evolved (devolved?), kidnapped Janeway, super-evolved her and made babies with her is one of those episodes -- I apparently missed that one during the first run.
Such a ludicrous story that was pulled off fairly well by the cast and crew. Certainly his best episode in my memory, both as a character and an actor.

If you got netflix the single best voyager episode may be Thirty Days the one where he is in the brig composing a letter to his dad. Classic bottle episode except for the flashback scenes. When he gets demoted is probably my favorite part of the series.

The first few episodes of season 5 are fantastic IMO, including 30 days. I really liked the Malon arc starting with season 1 episode Night and following up with the creation of the Delta Flyer. I also really liked the character of Tom Paris, but he was taken from a role that the actor played in an episode of the TNG, that was very similar but later re-named to be included in Voyager. The Captain Proton theme was great IMO.

The Pilot

Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy

That's my biggest issue with Voyager. I didn't care about the majority of the characters unlike DS9 where even minor ones would later get fleshed out and have some depth added to them.

Granted I'm nowhere near or never will be a Trekkie but I am 26. Voyager was my first intro to Star Trek when I was a kid. Voyager and the Abramsverse have been all I have liked. The rest seems so "space hippie" and dated to me. I've never seen Enterprise.
I saw Voyager when I was a kid during first run/early syndication I guess (late 90s). I didn't watch again until last year on Netflix.

The only episode of DS9 that I remember seeing was where some of the crew got sucked into some time warp and crash landed on some planet. Turns out they were sent hundreds of years into the future and they meet their descendents. It was kind of strange/cool. Like the descendents of Worf called themselves the Klingons, and lived a secluded life in some caves, and lived the warriors life.

This is my favorite Star Trek episode of all time.

I will add
Basics
Deadlock
Distant Origin
Prototype
Worst Case Scenario
Scorpion
Scientific Method
Message in a Bottle/Hunter/Prey
Think Tank
Relativity
Dark Frontier
War Head
Night/Extreme Risk
Drone
Timeless
Equinox
Dragon's Teeth
Collective
Tsunkatse
Child's Play
One Small Step
Blink of an Eye
Unamatrix Zero
Drive
Flesh and Blood
Shattered
The Void
There are probable about 1 season's worth of true stinkers in the series. Most are decent, but after reading thought the episode guide, the ones I've listed are true great Trek IMO.

I was doing my top 5 off memory then I realized I didnt add 30 days so it became top 6.
Voyager was at its best when it wasn't Star Trek.
