I don't get the Janeway hate, she's a great Captain. Maybe some of you just don't like a woman in the big chair?

Weird bump.

She just didn't inspire confidence - she tended to underdo discipline and order when it would have helped, and overdo it after her lax/fast and loose approach was understandably misunderstood.

I do give her props for giving a crap about the personal lives of the crew - and her smaller crew and the circumstances of the show made that more possible. But, it has nothing to do with her gender. Out of all the "deputies" of the ST series, Kira would be at the top of my list - she's not perfect, but when you go to war you want either the tough/smart combinations (Spock/Data/Tuvok) - or the warriors/killers (Kirk, Yar, Worf, Garrick, Kira).

One of Voyager's problems is that they didn't really have a warrior/killer - Tuvok had to fill that role, along with his other roles, and, while pretty good (ultimately my second favorite of the crew, after Doc), didn't quite do it.

She was boring. Also her voice aggravates me for some reason. The way she walked and moved around always made me think she had back problems.

I actually like the show but I am almost not sure why I like the show because the Doctor was the only character I 100% liked.

I forget her exact quote, but even Mulgrew didn't like the way Janeway was written. There was such a difference between the way some of the writers would portray her, she sometimes came off as schizophrenic.

Well most of us should be able to agree that Kirk is a god awful captain. That just leaves Picard.

Commanded ships blown up: Picard: 2 Janeway: 1/2

and she acknowledges freely when she breaks the Prime Directive instead of trying to weasle her way out of it with philosophical ramblings.

and she's not a complete prick to half her crew like Picard is.

and she doesn't have to rely on Wesley to save the ship or Troi to take the helm.

I do not concur.

I gave her credit for that - she is awfully hot and cold though. Lax and lenient when she shouldn't be - and then tries to overcompensate when someone takes advantage of that - at least Picard was consistent (and much more realistic to commanders in real life - good ones, at that.)

And I consistently shoot holes in the "TNG is the BEST" posters because of Deus ex Wesley, particularly for the better part of the first 2 seasons - and other weaknesses of TNG. Therefore, I agree with you there.

DS9 had the best balance of reality, quasi-religion, cast chemistry, real world consequences, etc., etc. On balance, it may be the finest product in the ST universe, although not considered so at the time. I'm still on Team TOS (tradition mostly, but Spock is still THE best character in all of Star Trek) - especially when you consider it had the best feature film as well, but DS9 should get more recognition.

The best non-starfleet characters - and by a significant margin (I count The Doctor as Starfleet) - Quark, Garrick, Weyoun, Dukat (and the best recurring villain) - really only missing Mudd, because Q also appeared on DS9.

Voyager's strength is the Doctor, Tuvok, and to a lesser degree, Paris and Neelix. Kim was alright and I don't hate on Seven as much as others do, but Chuckles and Janeway were just awful at times - and those were the top 2 ranking officers. The writers didn't always hold up their end of the bargain, but I thought the direction was really solid in Voyager as well - probably as good as any of the modern series (but no better than DS9).

Did you bump this just because of the threads lately about how chicks are terrible?

And she was a terrible captain. Picard was the only one worth a frick.

This the same guy who consistently puts his ship and crew is horrible situation after horrible situation and relies on blind luck to get them out of it?
