Each boot is different. They will also stretch over time. I buy something that feels a little tight knowing that it'll stretch in a week or two. I basically walk around and go up on my tippy toes a few times to see if my heel comes up. If it does, the shoe is too big

Your boots should be a little tight at first. They won't shrink, so order some new ones or prepare for blisters

Boots should be really right at first... You should hear/feel a pop when your foot goes in. Also, boots usually slip a bit at the heel. I wear a 12 in running shoes, 11.5 in dress shoes and a 11 in a boot. The widest part of your foot should line up with the widest part of the boot... Something else to look at when trying them on. But, I would expect workers at cavendars would know that as long as that place has been in business. I learned that from a guy who ran a cavendars in Houston about 15yrs ago.
