I don't think Jeannie ever married Tony to be Jeannie Nelson?

Did you watch the show at all?

They got engaged (which killed the plot device that her existence had to be kept secret - changing it to the very Bewitched-like, keeping her magical nature a secret), then married, which killed the sexual tension and the show. It was never going to be the somewhat more subtle, comical look at post-war/Vietnam era suburban life (like Gomer Pyle, there was virtually no mention of Vietnam in IDOJ) that Bewitched was and losing all the energy required of keeping Jeannie secret while she pursued Tony was lost with the engagement and marriage.

Saw a Jim Nabors interview where he said the guys he marched with in the title scene were real Marines. Most of them went to Vietnam, and a lot of them were killed or wounded.
