Let's start talking about next season for a minute. I know there is a big important game Saturday night but this is an issue I wouldn't mind us starting to talk about today, contracts.

The Saints are in a tight spot when it comes to money so I put a spreadsheet together for all of us to look at. I made sure to include the big contracts and important players.

Who should we cut? How can we sign JG for life? Will we have to redo Drew's contract? Etc...

(Highlighted names are FA in 2014 and their contract no longer has an effect on the Saints salary cap)

I'm sure we cut ties with Brown(especially if Armstead works out) , Smith , Vilma and hopefully Harper and Jenkins

Players to cut that will save us money:

Will Smith
Darren Sproles
Patrick Robinson

Players to Keep:

Khiry Robinson (This guy can replace Sproles for a 1/10th of the cost)

Hopefully Will Smith does the right thing and walks away quietly.

Don't forget, Jordan is in a contract year next season too.

If I'm reading this right: We can cut Will Smith, Jabari Greer, Lance Moore, D. Sproles, Harper, and Robinson and save around $36 million against the cap (somebody correct me if I'm wrong).

Not going to be popular, but we can save another $14 million by cutting Bunkley and Colston.

That would be $50 million. I say cut them. We need to get younger. Khiry can play the Sproles role in the event we cant draft someone like the kid from Oregon. Colston is on the wrong side of 30. I realize cutting Colston and Moore would not be popular, but then sign we can Jimmy to a new deal.

I'm no cap expert, but to me its frustrating watching our WRs that get 0 separation. There's no speed there...and $13 million for 2 WRs that are aging and don't have top end speed? No thanks.

If somebody is a cap expert and I'm wrong on these numbers, please correct me...

What could we do with $50 mill in cap space? I would think a lot.

cutting:
smith (11.55m) - bye big fella.

harper (2.18m) - I'd go for it if we draft another safety. he was gone for a good bit of this season and we performed extremely well. vaccaro made him replaceable

greer (3.175m) - that injury looked devastating and he's getting old. he was still a very good #2, but if he can't come back there's no point to keep him

moore (2.531m) - production vs. cost, it isn't there. you're paying him 5mil next year to give you 400-500 ypg. Is it worth it? Some of the bigger games against physical DBs he disappeared.

sproles (3.5m) - 4.25m cap hit, saves you 3.5m. This looks like a restructure unless we plan on drafting de'anthony thomas or someone to replace him. He's getting old, but he still produces and he's shifty

thomas (2.9m) - cap hit is 2.9m, so you save that much. he's still our best back, but if ingram goes lights out in the playoff(s), we could be saying goodbye.

prob (950k) - if he comes back well from injury, he's a solid #3 and a decent #2 DB. costs 2.4mil, and the savings doesn't do much for us.

Total: 26.786mil

If Greer retires, we save a ton of cash

Robinson isn't even close to Sproles in terms of talent. The only possible way I see them letting him go is if they get Seastruck or D'Anthony Thomas in the draft. Besides, Brees and Payton love Sproles, no way they get rid of him.

Payton and the front office love Jenkins. This makes me wonder what type of contract they give him.

Smith needs to do the right thing and walk away. It's time Mr. Smith, it's time.

I don't see them doing anything with Pierre Thomas' contract either. They will let him play out his last year next year, them offer him a minimum contract or let him walk, IMHO.

I wonder what they do with Strief and Brown. Do they take the best contract and let that player start at right tackle. Brown did well at right tackle when Strief was hurt. Just a thought.

DLP has been a big disappointment this year. It was a contract year for him, which is even worse. I'd like to think they get a center in the draft, but who knows.

Will Smith and Vilma are done. Jenkins likely won't be back. Harper should get the stepping.

Jimmy Graham needs a better agent. That salary is pathetic for someone of his caliber and talent. Is he still under his rookie contract? If not, he definitely needs a new agent.

Damn, we can't cut Robinson

No way we could recover from a 667$ loss. It'd bankrupt us for decades
