I'm thankful to have a friend who has tons of land near me, but he absolutely insists on hunting with me when we hunt. I've done my best to teach him outdoors, but I think his ADD and awful impatience has killed every single hunt we've been on. He still hasn't grasped that you have to talk at a low whisper

He has prime land that is chock full of deer, but I don't see any chance of ever killing one if I have to sit in another double box with him.

I don't think I can give it up, because it's prime land, it's close, and of course he's my good friend. He has all this land, but he didn't start hunting until a couple of us convinced him to let us hunt. He won't follow anyone out but me.

What should I do? What would you do?

If that worked, I would have killed a deer the first week of the season.

We literally had a 10 point walk out on the opening day of gun season, and I told him it was his for his first deer. As I'm spotting, he turns around and loudly unzips the camp bag to find ear plugs.

Tell him it is more of a solitary sport with group celebrations. Best way to learn how to hunt is to have someone give you some pointers and then figure it out on your own

As a guide... I explained it like this a lot....

If a cow was in your living room, it would be hard not to notice....

For them its life or death for you it's sport....

Being still and quiet matter.....more than camo and scent free gear....

I killed a limit of ducks and strap full of geese once wearing a red santa hat to drive this point home....

Split up - to increase chances bag a deer move on

Oh, that's been tried. I even went so far as to choose to ground hunt rather than in a stand, and he said he wanted to follow me to learn how to ground hunt.

I'm all for teaching, but damn I want a deer.

The other guys love it because they know their stands will be safe as long as he is with me.

Should we lottery him off next year?

Just for reference, of the three of us that got him to let us hunt, I'm the only one that hasn't hit his max on bucks already . One guy had 8 pt or better, the other 6. They just hunt does now.

I have literally only seen one doe all season.

Schedule hunts that you know he wouldn't be able to attend. Wait until he is at work or out of town.

People who don't hunt honestly have no idea what it takes to be a predator. Hopefully the bag zipping was his first real lesson: be quiet and be ready. Organization is huge on being ready or being able to get ready without drawing attention. He might not have picked up on that but it's one of the most important things.

Have him shoot a spike. They're usually dumb and should be an easy target. He should know whether he wants to hunt after that. Then tell him the next step is to do it on his own.

Other than that, sneak on to the property

One of my oldest friends who inherited a ton of land. It's smack fab in the middle of other hunting camps and hasn't been hunted in over 10 years. It's like a damn deer sanctuary out there.

I wish I could schedule them without him, but we aren't allowed out there without him with us. He's a lawyer like me and is freaked out about liability issues. He has people working the farm, so I can't just sneak in without getting noticed.

If it is that good a property, why no offer to get liability insurance like most lessees do? You can get a couple million dollar policy for a few hundo

The liability insurance didn't cut it with him (he's a plaintiffs attorney who hates insurance companies).

Even then, this is not a lessee situation. I'm allowed to hunt this land with his permission only.

I'm starting to think I'll just hit him with a sleeping pill in next weeks coffee.

Well like CS said, tell him divide and conquer is the best way for one or both of you to get one. Other than that, hope that one day he passes out in the stand so you can hunt in peace
