9mm barrel differences and velocities

The Glock 34 barrel is almost 1 inch longer than the Glock 17.
Depending on what you read, that equates to about an additional 50 feet per second.
What does that really mean in real world self defense? What would that extra 50 f/s mean for a 135 or 124 +p round?
Could anyone justify paying $100 more for a competition gun for the extra 50 f/s?
If you don't mind keeping these items out of the conversation:
-better trigger
-longer sight radius
this is really a question about what extra velocity can do for a 124/135 +p round, and what does it REALLY mean?

Mr Hickok may have something to say about this:
Velocity comparisons.
But in my own opinion, I prefer a longer sight radius.

If you want higher velocities with a 9mm bullet you can find a 357sig. They're a good bit faster.

1. Keep in mind that a 4" Storm Lake bbl, or a 4" KKM bbl will not produce the same velocity as a factory Glock 4" bbl.
2. Today's good SD ammo will penetrate and expand reliably from the G26 or G27 -- and will clearly penetrate and expand adequately in longer Glock bbls. -- based on the FBI test proocols. If they wouldn't, the FBI would not (and thus no LEO agency would) issue them.

I think there is something missing in "the numbers" when using f/s.
Kinda like saying there's not much difference in water flow between a 3" and 4" drain pipe (only 25% difference in size). Yet in reality, the flow is DOUBLED!
I think we can agree that a 357 mag's performance dwarfs a 9mm, yet not much difference in velocity.
My Hi-Point 9mm carbine will punch a hole right through a 6" diameter pine tree at 70 yards, whereas a 9mm pistol fails to do so at 7 yards.
As is the case with pi in the diameter of a pipe (squared), perhaps something is something similar with f/s and flying bullets that we're not factoring? Need someone smarter than me for this.
