Why would Alabama agree to do that? They already had Saban. Paying off that debt would put the contract value at a ridiculous amount that Alabama shouldn't have entertained at that time.

You should have because of this very situation. I understand Alabama not just offering without reason, but now the reason has come along and it has likely cost you your coach.
