Keith Spera's take:
quote:
Definitely coming: Jazz fusion keyboardist Chick Corea and Texas singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen. Both Corea and Keen have Jazz Fest dates listed on their respective web sites.
And even though R&B singer "Uncle" Charlie Wilson is already booked for this summer's Essence Festival in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, a knowledgeable source tells me he'll also funk up the Fair Grounds this spring.
Probable, based on tour schedules with empty southeastern dates that suspiciously coincide with Jazz Fest:
Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend. Both indie-rock bands have open dates on Jazz Fest weekends, and will be within easy driving distance of New Orleans. And Arcade Fire, announced this week as a headliner of the Coachella festival in Southern California on April 13 and 20, is a veteran of Jazz Fest.
Bruno Mars' North American summer tour kicks off in May. His web site lists an itinerary with cities, but no dates, and New Orleans is among them. So if he's not at Jazz Fest, he'll be in New Orleans shortly thereafter.
Theoretically possible (they'll be touring somewhere on the planet this spring): OutKast (the reunited rap duo is at Coachella on April 11 and 18). Santana. John Fogerty. The Allman Brothers (who will be saying goodbye to guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks by year's end). Sting. Paul Simon. Bruce Springsteen. Eric Clapton.
Not happening in 2014: Kings of Leon. Elton John. Prince.
Of course, nothing is official until Jazz Fest says it is. And that moment arrives on Jan. 14.
