Cutting the cable. DVR options?

Has anyone cut the cable? I'm about to go HDTV antenna only and need a viable option for dvr'ing programs. I've looked at Tivo, but I'd rather find an option that doesn't include a monthly fee.
Suggestions?
ETA: I've searched online, but most of the info I've found is several years old.

What are you gonna DVR? Why not just buy Hulu+ or something and not DVR anything

Does Hulu+ have all programming?
ETA: Just checked their lineup. They don't have even half of the shows I want to dvr.

I'm pretty interested in this as well. I'm getting an Apple TV for Christmas and am working toward getting rid of paying for cable when my contract runs out with directv.

I put a dual TV tuner card this one in an old gateway computer. Put it by the TV, HDMI from comp to TV. Old TV antenna to the tuner card. All OTA channels saved to hard drive through windows media center. Your area will have SD channels also, quite a few older shows on those channels.

That's a bit above my paygrade, technologically-speaking. I'm not quite tech savvy enough to pull that off. I'm looking for something more like a Tivo, but without the monthly fee.
Also, what indoor antenna would be recommended? I was thinking of just buying a cheap one and working my way up til I found one that was acceptable, but if someone from Baton Rouge already has one that works, it'd be nice to just buy the best one up front.

What shows do you want to watch?? There's apps for a lot of shows. I don't understand what you are gonna dvr that you can get on basic channels that's not on hulu or something

Big Bang Theory, Covert Affairs, Sons of Anarchy, Suits, White Collar, Walking Dead, Justified, Longmire, NCIS...the list is long. I checked the lineup on Hulu plus and none of those were on there.

Windows 7 Media Center, HD HomeRun DUAL, or if you can wait, they're coming out with a new version that can transcode to H.264. The DUALs are going for $60 now.

Wouldn't you not be able to watch like 90% of those shows with only an antenna anyway? What would a dvr help?
I'm not being a dick I'm seriously trying to help. I also believe there is a cbs app. Could always stream it on a website like primewire.ag or watch it live
Fx and USA should have apps
Once again not trying to be a dick but if you watch so many shows then why cut cable?

Does the HomeRun stream to a TV or just to a PC?

Most I can watch online, but there are lots of network shows I'd like to record. Also want it to record sports on the networks.

CBS is like the only network that doesn't have apps or be on hulu

Still have to pay for service or $400 for a lifetime(of the device) subscription. That thing dies in 2 years, I may as well have gotten a Tivo.

For DVR, you need Windows Media Center, hence a PC, and Windows 7 is the way to go for that. There is other DVR software for ATSC and even Clear QAM, but I don't know anything about it, and you might want to look into it. The Prime and the upcoming versions stream to devices that support DLNA. I don't know about the DUAL and DLNA. In any case, DLNA != DVR, and your TV probably has an ATSC tuner built in anyway.

What feature are you wanting to use that isn't covered under the basic service, which is just a one time fee?
