It's harder to watch a truly bad defense, and it ain't really close. I think one of the posters above me mentioned that a dominating defense can make an average offense look good--if only because they give the O a lot more time on the field.
A bad O can always make something happen if the opportunity presents itself (we compiled a pretty impressive record from 09-12 with generally subpar offensive play).
With a bad D, your offense can be pretty damned good and you'll still lose a bunch of heartbreaking games because no lead is safe from a halfway decent offensive attack.
