The biggest buck I've ever seen in person was killed with a 22-250. Teach him to hit what he's aiming at and he'll be fine.

Both of my daughters have killed many deer with there 223.
60 grain Federal Nosler Partion
They both shoot very well out to 100yrds and I don't let them take shots any further.
Shot placement is more crucial than with bigger calibers, but if he's not accurate with it, he shouldn't be hunting with it anyway.
