Did New Orleans ever come close to landing an MLB team in the past?

I find it somewhat surprising that the city has never had a team given how big it was (compared with other cities in the past) and how long MLB has been around. MLB first moved southward in 1961 when Houston got the Astros and the Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966. New Orleans got the Saints in 1967 and the Jazz in 1974. Seems that it had to be under consideration for a baseball franchise at some point.

If New Orleans had a team way back then I'm sure there would be a big following still today, now no way.

City is not nearly big enough. You need an urban area with at least a few millions

Superdome officials pursued negotiations with Oakland Athletics officials during the 1978–79 baseball off-season about moving the Athletics to the Superdome. The Athletics were unable to break their lease at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and remained in Oakland. Superdome officials met with the Pittsburgh Pirates in April 1981 about moving the club to New Orleans when the Pirates were unhappy with their lease at Three Rivers Stadium.

The Zephyrs do not even have 200 people on some nights come to their games.

It's hard to draw 50k a game for 81+ games when only a million or so people live within 2 hours

I always wanted a southern MLB division with Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville, NOLA, and Houston. The shite talking would be amazing.

New Orleans doesn't give a shite about pro baseball, and rightfully so.

As I understand it, that was only because our Senator Long and Representative Boggs twisted the arm of the NFL and would only exempt the merger of the AFL and NFL from antitrust laws if New Orleans was awarded a franchise.

I'd probably get into baseball if New Orleans had a pro team. Although it's probably for the best that we don't have one. The support would likely resemble the Pelicans.

Idk whether they've come close to having a franchise before but I feel like NOLA should have one. I firmly believe the city could support it and would be a great natural rival for the Braves/Astros/Cards.

Always wondered the same thing about the NBA in STL. Kinda surprising when you think of it

Found an old AP article from 1989 about baseball exhibitions in the Dome. LINK

The Baltimore Orioles were ready to move to New Orleans in 1974, but the Superdome Commission couldn't guarantee the stadium would be finished in time. That left businessman Joe Canizaro -the principal money man in the search- red-faced in anger and embarrassment.

History has been cited in answer to your question. Corporate support is less than iffy in Nawlins and the interest level isn't there to support the schedule.
