I think you can make an exception for a potential future NFL HOFer who is also an alum, if he was interested.
As far as recruiting, "Hi, I'm Kevin Mawae. You may remember me from my 16 season NFL career, and my 8 Pro Bowl appearances. Would you like to come play for LSU?"

exactly his other accomplishments make up for the lack of actual coaching experience
