And you know how you get a second contract? By being taken in the first two rounds. Guys taken after the 3rd round face a huge uphill climb of getting a long enough look to even get a shot at real playing time, much less a second contract.
I completely agree, and I think it's the only pitch that works, but it's tough when the money is already on the table. For every example of a guy jumping to the first two rounds with another year there's a Barkley. How well would you have listened at 21 when someone was giving you good advice? The hard reality is MOST college players will never even sniff success in the NFL, but the current setup was fought for tooth and nail by the owners so that it would cost them less money to weed out the busts, and draft grades don't reflect NFL success. A player sees a fourth round grade and thinks "I'm getting drafted!" while a GM sees a fourth round pick as a tryout. Owners are in no hurry to correct the misunderstanding, and it will take a while for it to sink in at the college level.
I'll say it again because I think it's the foundation of my point, they ALL think they're Mingo and not Sam. They all think they'll be the guy who makes it to that second contract no matter where they're drafted. Combine that with the allure of immediate money, and it's over.

But that makes no sense. Once you go to the committee that tells you your likely draft grade, you already know whether you're Sam or Mingo. If you get a 1st round grade, godspeed. Go to the NFL. No one is stopping you.
But if you don't get a 1st round grade, now it's time to think. Look at Bennie Logan. And he's one of the SUCCESS STORIES. Look at your draft grade, then make a decision. If you're being told 3rd round, you're not Mingo. Mingo was a top ten pick. Top ten picks have different rules.
