Stringer had the ball, attacking the basket. There was a defender desperately trying to get back to make a play. There was Hickey, almost in a straight line going through Stringer and Hickey. That's a bad place for Hickey to be because if Stringer needs to pass, he can't pass to Hickey because he's effectively blocked by the defender. If Hickey trails slightly--not directly behind Stringer, but from the other side of the basket and further away--then the defender can't possibly defend both players, and Hickey can attack the bucket knowing he has an easy pass to make if he needs to. Players never seen to learn that anymore, and they need to.
But this should end in a lay up, not a mid-range jumper.
And your idea that the point of the rule change is to incorporate mid-range jumpers back into the game seems contrary to what the NCAA has decided to do. Apparently, the NCAA is focusing on contact on the ball handler, not on off-ball contact.
And I'm not being a dick, just pointing out the glaring inaccuracies in your justification for the rule change.

Late on Droppings but what an exciting team we have despite a 2 pt loss. They will hopefully learn from this which is what it's all about and practice free throws, my gosh. But I don't have to tell JJ that, as he da man.

So what is the point of the rule change? It can't simply be just to have players "foul less."
You said yourself that the refs have relaxed their off the ball calls over the last 20 years, yet the focus seems to be on the ball handler.

Wait so u can see perfect tic tac fouls but not tell difference in black guys?

quote:That's exactly the point. The stuff that's been allowed for years now--the stuff that analysts call "good, hard-nosed, physical play"--is actually called "fouling," and the NCAA is wisely trying to reel it back a smidge.

Okay, but you see how this results in more drives to the basket and less jump shots if players are not allowed to get physical inside right?

that depends on your personal interpretation of how the game should be played, if you want a less physical game then yes you're statement is right, it's obvious thats the type of game you like
to each his own

Exactly. Must not have been watching that closely, eh?

quote:I get your point, but players have constantly driven to the basket in the past several years (many teams base their entire offenses on it, in fact, which some people--myself included--do not like), so there is no real possible increase ahead on that.
Okay, but you see how this results in more drives to the basket
quote:Look, they're going to be shooting more mid-range shots. Just watch. It's going to happen. When the game began to be called more leniently beginning in the late 80's and especially the early post-Shaq 90's, the mid-ranger was the one thing that went the way of the dodo. If officiating reverses its trend, I see it coming back.

Fair enough. We'll see.

While I may disagree with you, I really hope you're right. Watching games from the mid-late 80's were a treat. While there weren't as many highlight dunks, when guys were left open for 15 ft jumpers they made the opponent pay.

Watched most of the game from work and just got to TD... I was very impressed with this team despite the loss. On the road in hostile environment and they almost pulled it off. Add in quite a few inconsistent calls by the refs too imo.
Good game to start the season and build off of. Looking forward to Tiger basketball this season.

b) There was a drive late in the game when (I think) Stringer was speeding down the court on a 2-on-1 with (I think) Hickey alongside him. Alongside him!
You're right.
This is a play these 2 do well. Stringer seems to automatically know where an open space is and runs, with Hickey right behind.
I've been to 2 practices so far and they're not practicing this. I don't know why.

Encouraging first game from the Tigers . Going to be a nice year.

Did you make signs for encouragement at practice? Mrs creepster

Just because your on the road does not make it a "hostile environment" i mean come on 10:00 a.m. on a Tuesday @ UMASS is not a hostile environment in college basketball.
