Anyone ever do some Yellowstone backcountry hiking/backpacking

Planning a Nodust family trip next summer. We are going to make a trip through Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. Spending a few days in Yellowstone and hitting campgrounds along the way.
Just wondering if anyone has backcountry packed in Yellowstone. How was the permitting?
We've got a short one nighter planned for Montana right where we used to live. Going to summit Mount Haggin. It's a 7 mile trip from the town, limb from 5200 to 10600. May turn into a two night stay if needed.
Going to finish in Pagosa Springs Co. Got some friends close by there. May hike some of the Colorado Trail or just some of the San Juan National Forest trails.

frick their permits. frick their sky-high fees. frick their commie-arse rules and restrictions.
I sneak in the back door (no homo) via Ashton, Idaho entering at Cave Falls. Park vehicle down cattle side trail. They never know I'm there.
I also catch all the rainbow trout I can eat using live bait (using live bait against da law...catching fish outside of designated fishing areas also against da law...fishing without a special Yellowstone Permit in addition to your regular fishing license is against da law too).
One time spent 2 weeks in there with two of my kids (mo than 7 days is also against da law). Had a great time.
I don't pay those arse-hats a dime and don't get permits for anything. I pay my taxes...frick 'em.
$25 to park and $12 to hike in?! frick 'em!

Coastie knows what up.
To me, 95% of Yellowstone is backcountry.
If you're worried about the forestry service, buy a pass to whatever summer sport they offer, then get lost at the end of the day.
If/when they find y'all, show them your pass and just explain that you got lost.

Looking at all the campgrounds is confusing. Think I found a few that would work. If the wife wants to camp with us it will decrease the miles we walk. I really want to camp by the Yellowstone River. But that will most likely be a higher traffic area.

So you just sleep on the ground where ever you stop?
Where do you camp?
Where do you camp?
