i've got a 44 but it's a front axle narrowed for jeep/scout and matches my 14 bolt C&C. i guess i could just use it and remove the tubes and axles and weld in pipe and hub and bearing assy's

Cut the chunk out of a junkyard 44 and weld it to a regular trailer axle
I'd take the gears out of a broken 44 and run a solid axleshaft all of the way through with d44 hubs so it wouldn't drag

if you left the shafts in the axle you could swap them out when you snap one
Eta: unless you have a full floating rear D44
