Frodo walking allowed the happenstance to occur that actually got the ring destroyed, that's how its different.
You're being obtuse in not recognizing the rings will...which is the whole point of the story.

Frodo was virtually unaffected by the ring for a significant portion of the journey. If they took the eagles then the journey would have been much shorter and thus Frodo would have arrived at mount doom before the rings power had begun to take hold on him.

Or perhaps a one week trip would have made it much easier to drop the ring in Mt. Doom. You can't remotely say for sure he wouldn't have been able to drop it.
He got all the way to the edge of the lava pit after a grueling 1 year trip, poisoned by the morgul blade. Crushed by a cave troll and stabbed by Shelob's stinger and he still almost did it.
