You do realize that nobody actually destroyed the ring, right? Frodo's intent was to destroy it, but in the end, even he, had to submit to its will. The ring only got destroyed because of chance (Gollum ended up falling into the fires and perishing with it).
This is a major plot point.
The ring is Sauron. It has a will of its own and it doesn't want to be destroyed. It will use its power to turn whoever wields it into the next Sauron. The rings power is strongest at the place where it was created, which is also the only place it can be destroyed.
The eagles could perhaps have been convinced to fly to Mordor and attempt to have the ring destroyed but whoever went there to destroy it, would simply claim the ring for themselves as soon as they got there.

quote:That's a good observation but doesn't really change the argument.

You knuckleheads are taking this too seriously.
The eagles are a deus ex machina device. Yes, they could have taken someone to Mt Doom and yes, that person would have been possibly possessed to the point of being unable to destroy the ring.
However Gandalf didn't know that for sure. It wouldn't have been any different than sending Frodo walking. Except it would have taken tremendously less time and who knows in such a short amount of time, perhaps Frodo would have had the willpower to toss it in.
