LOTR Eagles

Why don't the giant eagles get more respect? The only reason Sam and frodo survived after destroying the ring was because of them. The entire troupe of dwarves plus bilbo only survived when facing the pale Orc was because of them.

Eagles are pretty bad arse, and are well respected IMO

Because they tend to keep to themselves and not get involved.

A bit of a deus ex machina device.
One could ask why Gandalf didn't ask the Eagles to carry Frodo to Mt Doom to drop off the ring. 10 pages and the trilogy is over.

Yet they save the day in both the Hobbit and LOTR.

I don't see why you think the Eagles weren't respected.

Nazgul, Fell Beasts, the Eye of Sauron can strike down anything, hoards of orcs would be waiting for them on Mount Doom, etc. They may have destroyed the Ring, but using the Eagles to destroy the Ring would have ensured their deaths.

They could easily have snuck in at night. All the Nazgul were off looking for the ring and attacking Minis Tirith.

Hey! Let's use the eagles, but first let's let 100,000 humans die.

Well, with that plan, and the Fellowship not at the battle to save the day, then the whole plan is fricked.

I hate this argument because it is incredibly simplistic and ignores the very reason that it was only a fellowship of 9 to escort the ring to Mt. Doom.
Sauron never thought that anyone would try to destroy the one ring. He thought that whoever had it would claim it for their own. If the fellowship had used the EAgles to fly into Mordor then Sauron would have seen it immediately, sent out the Nazgul to attempt to stop them and guarded the entrance to Mt. Doom. There is no way the ring would have been destroyed if they just flew into Mordor on the Eagles.

Your own comments defeat your own argument.
He would not have expected the destruction thus the eagles could easily have snuck in. He would not have seen it immediately as you claim because he was already looking elsewhere.
Thanks for winning the debate for me.

You do realize that nobody actually destroyed the ring, right? Frodo's intent was to destroy it, but in the end, even he, had to submit to its will. The ring only got destroyed because of chance (Gollum ended up falling into the fires and perishing with it).
This is a major plot point.
The ring is Sauron. It has a will of its own and it doesn't want to be destroyed. It will use its power to turn whoever wields it into the next Sauron. The rings power is strongest at the place where it was created, which is also the only place it can be destroyed.
The eagles could perhaps have been convinced to fly to Mordor and attempt to have the ring destroyed but whoever went there to destroy it, would simply claim the ring for themselves as soon as they got there.

You knuckleheads are taking this too seriously.
The eagles are a deus ex machina device. Yes, they could have taken someone to Mt Doom and yes, that person would have been possibly possessed to the point of being unable to destroy the ring.
However Gandalf didn't know that for sure. It wouldn't have been any different than sending Frodo walking. Except it would have taken tremendously less time and who knows in such a short amount of time, perhaps Frodo would have had the willpower to toss it in.

Yes he did. Hence his fear of the ring, as well as everyone else that was wise who came into contact with it not wanting to touch it.
Frodo was only able to carry it with him and be seemingly unaffected because hobbits had such little power to begin with that the ring couldn't do much through them.
But, whatever....

How would Frodo on an Eagle be and different than Frodo walking. Are you trying to be obtuse?
Posted on 10/27/13 at 1:34 pm to TigerMyth36
Frodo walking allowed the happenstance to occur that actually got the ring destroyed, that's how its different.
You're being obtuse in not recognizing the rings will...which is the whole point of the story.

Frodo was virtually unaffected by the ring for a significant portion of the journey. If they took the eagles then the journey would have been much shorter and thus Frodo would have arrived at mount doom before the rings power had begun to take hold on him.
